The Valentine’s Day Gospel

by Matt

My mom was a Florist before she went to work in the church as one of the pastoral ministry staff. As a Florist she had her fair share of stories. Here is one of them. I just felt that it would be such a waste if I do not blog about this, especially considering the approaching Valentine’s.

In the recent years there was a boy who went around pranking people on Valentine’s day. He would go into a crowd of people and shouted “who would want the rose in my hand for free?” When there are many people who responded to him saying that they would want it, he would throw the rose on the floor and start to step on it. After reducing the rose to smithereens, he would hold up the rose all tattered and torn saying, “Ah ha! So who wants the rose now?” As people started to walk away a voice bellowed from the crowd “Jesus wants the rose! Jesus wants that rose!”

This is a startling exclamation that holds the crux of the gospel message — that Jesus wants us no matter how repulsive we may be. Everyone of us would at times find ourselves being like that rose, trampled by many, being passed around, being made fun of because we are nothing much of value. But the whole Bible exclaims the fact that Jesus wants us even though we are of nothing much.

Jesus wants the rose.

Maybe you are single and feeling the lonely pinch of Valentine’s telling you that you are probably ugly or have other repulsive peculiarities, that you are not good enough, and that is why nobody wants you. That is the biggest lie ever! Do continue the wait, be faithful to God and never compromise. There is no better reward than waiting for the guy/girl who models themselves after Jesus. Someday a godly man/woman will see the value that God had made in you.

Jesus makes you valuable.
