Reason for God
by Matt
On my way home last night, I had the chance to chat with Kunjie over msn. Kunjie mentioned that he was being slammed by a friend who is really critical of the logic that leads to religious thought. To that I just mentioned the reason I chose to hold a theistic outlook in life.
The reason that I believe in God is simply because I just cannot comprehend the thought that everything I see or feel came from nothing. I am a person, and the reason that I know how to be one must be that because the “person” that created me must understand what it means to be a person. When I was in Nepal I saw so many mountains and valleys. There is so much beauty in creation and I just cannot imagine someone not understanding beauty to create them. The reason why I can love Serene so much shows that my maker certainly knows what love is all about. The reason I have intelligence, means my maker must be intelligent or at least understand the notion of intelligence fully. I am a creative person, so my maker must understand creativity fully. As far as I can remember, I grew having a sense of right and wrong (whether my sense of rightness is really right is another thing altogether), the reason for that must be that my maker have some sense of justice.
I just cannot deny the things I see and feel saying that all these things come together in the formula of Time x Matter x Chance. I do not believe that everything came from nothing. Intelligence from non-intelligence. Beauty from non-beauty. Personhood from non-personhood. An understanding of good and evil from an amoral void.
To me, to not believe in God would take a even greater leap of faith. Simple reasoning. It is the same way I believe that the space between my ears are occupied by my brain. I cannot directly see it, but everything else tells me that it is there.
The closest match to this thought has got to be the Christian account of Creation. The first chapter of Romans tells me that creation itself is a grand display of God’s nature and attributes. And the epitome of all creation is Man. Man was created as a mirror to reflect God’s glory but due to Sin that mirror is marred and my destiny is hell after death. Because God so loved me that He sent Jesus to die for my Sin, so that if I believe that he is my savior and acknowledge him as Lord, I would find myself spending eternality with God.
This gospel message really appealed to me. There is no way that one can accept the Christian concept of Creation but not the salvation message as they come together as a package. There is nothing like the Christian gospel message, there is no other “Jesus Christ” around who came and died for my wrong doings and resurrected. This is the extraordinary claim that the original eye-witnesses are willing to die for, along with so many others.
That is why I believe… and I am willing to die for it too.
Now critics may remark that there is still a possibility that everything came from nothing. I totally do not deny that possibility. But I just want to suggest the greater possibility that there is “someone” behind everything that we see, hear and feel so real. “Someone” who understands us fully, and desires for us to come to know “Him”.
